Church Office
The Church Office will continue to be covered on a part time basis over the next two months. On October 1st we will welcome Emily back to work as our Parish Administrator. We congratulate Emily on her appointment to this key position in our church life.

Summer Newsletters
The notices will be published fortnightly over the Summer and throughout September. Please note all notices for the newsletter need to be emailed to the office by the Tuesday evening prior to publication - the next deadline is Tuesday 2nd September.
Tuesday Evening Prayer
Please note there are no Tuesday Evening Prayer meetings in August. Prayer meetings will resume on Tuesday 2nd September. We will then meet again each week on Tuesday from 7.30-8pm in the Waddington Lounge and look forward to welcoming you along.
Women’s # Friday group - Friday 29th August
The womens #Friday group have planned to do the Holymoorside Millenium walk , or at least part of it on Friday 29th August. We will be meeting at 6.00pm in the Car Park next to Holymoorside Village Hall and walking to the Blue Stoops for Drinks/ Sarnies & Chips and a natter.
Sensible footwear recommended and check the weather re clothing! All welcome! Numbers are essential for food, please contact José (07486389423). Anyone not wanting to walk is welcome to join us at the pub!!
EVERYman Beer and Curry Evening - Friday 5th September
Meeting between 7 and 7.30pm at the Tramway pub on Chatsworth Road. Then onto the West Bars Tandoori a local curry house. Please sign-up by emailing events@stjohnswalton.co.uk. There is also a booking sheet on the board at the back of church. There is limited space so book up early.

PCC report from the meeting held on 28th July 2025
• David Stanners (Chair of the World Mission Team) presented a report and spoke to the PCC along with two other members of the Team. The report was positively received by members of the PCC. The tithing process mentioned in the report includes a review of which charities are being supported. The World Mission Team were asked to review the tithing process and which charities are being supported and offer guidance to the PCC before the PCC makes a decision on which charities to support in the coming year.
• The ‘World Chart’ with congregation responses (the luggage tags) was highlighted to the PCC. The World Mission Team were thanked for their efforts with this initiative which is both very interesting and informative.
• The World Mission Team are to consider themselves a subcommittee of the PCC. The Team were asked to consider how the congregation of St Peters can be involved with the work of the Team through an invitation for the Team to speak to the DCC. The Team were also asked to produce a report 2 or 3 times a year for the PCC.
• Ian Macleod updated the PCC on how currently ‘Social Action’ came under the “Evangelism and Social Action” ministry area that he leads. There will be an overall review of how the Ministry Areas should operate led by Rev. Nick Green. • A survey has been completed on the trees around the church with a need for some work to be done. A quote is being obtained. A financial gift has kindly been given to cover the costs of the survey.
• The play area is being updated and the carpet in the church where the children play at the back of the church is being cleaned professionally.
• Roofing work should be completed before the end of August.
• The PCC agreed to offer the post of Parish Administrator to Emily who has accepted the offer and is due to start in October.
• Health and Safety – it was reported to the PCC that the re-hinging of the fire doors in the hall, which were identified as an issue for users with restricted mobility, was not feasible. Changing the depth of the path seems the best option. Quotes for this work are being sought.
• The PCC approved the renewal of Sarah Brown’s Reader Licence.
• Following an enquiry from the Eco Group about installing solar panels, the PCC has asked the group to research and present a paper outlining the pros and cons of the potential installation of solar panels and batteries (and heat pumps) to St John’s.

Harvest Crafternoon at St. Peter’s
Can You Help at the Harvest Crafternoon at St Peter’s, Holymoorside?
Saturday 20th September 2025, 3–4pm
The congregation at St Peter’s Church, Holymoorside is running their second Crafternoon, this time with a Harvest theme, on Saturday 20th September. It would be fantastic if some of the St John’s congregation could help out!
This event is for local families with primary-aged and younger children, and it’s a great opportunity to offer a free, fun activity while getting to know the community. Children will need to be accompanied by an adult, but adult volunteers will lead the craft activities—giving parents a chance to relax with some homemade cake and a cup of tea.
Towards the end of the Crafternoon, we’ll have a short “pause for thought” to thank God for the harvest, and we’ll invite everyone to join us for the Harvest Festival service the following day.
How could you help?
1. Pray – for the small congregation at St Peter’s as they reach out to families in their area.
2. Bake a cake – homemade treats are always welcome!
3. Be a helper – with refreshments, crafts, or other tasks on the day.
4. Bring your family – if you have young children, come and enjoy the event, even if you don’t live in Holymoorside. Or invite friends with children in the area—perhaps attend with them.

Diocese of Derby communications survey.

Jo's end of curacy and future plans
As you may have heard during the Sunday services last week, I was recently appointed Academic and Formational Tutor at St Hild College. In this new job, I will be helping to teach some different aspects of Theology and supporting the development of new ordinands through the next academic year. I will officially start this part-time role on 1st September and will be based mostly online, with some in-person work across the college's three sites at Mirfield, Sheffield and Lincoln.
From 1st September until the end of October, my curacy will go part-time to enable me to take up my new role. I'll be at St John's on the 7th September and St Peter's on the 21st September, as well as a couple of Tuesday services too. I'll continue my work in the garden until the end of the season and will be popping in and out for other meetings too as I help handover various responsibilities. So there's time to see you all again before we go. Our last official service in the parish will be at the joint St John's Day celebration on the 28th September, where we hope to see people from across the congregations. Matt and I will be moving house during October and will have to say goodbye to Walton and Holymoorside by October 31st.
Thank you all for your prayers and support throughout my curacy and particularly over the last 6 months as we have served in Wingerworth. We appreciate your love, concern and encouragement so much. Looking forward to seeing you soon, Rev Jo (and Matt)
Farewell service of celebration and thanksgiving for
Archdeacon Karen Hamblin
13th September 2025, 2pm
As you may know, Archdeacon Karen Hamblin is retiring later this year. There will be two farewell services of celebration and thanksgiving for her ministry. The first of these will take place at St John's, Walton on Saturday 13th September at 2.30pm. A second service is happening at Derby Cathedral on Sunday 14th at 5.15pm. You are welcome to attend either service, but it would be particularly nice to have your support as we host the first of these at St John's, where Karen has been closely involved over a number of years.

Alpha course starts on Wednesday 24th September 2025 at 7:15pm.

We’re heading to Cliff College in the beautiful Peak District for a whole-Parish weekend on Saturday–Sunday, 13-14 June 2026.
Theme: “Knowing Jesus, Making Him Known” – a time for worship, teaching, fun, and fellowship for all ages, exploring how we can grow as disciples, reach out to adults and young people, and care for God’s creation.
