PCC News – November 2025

It has been a very busy time for the PCC with a lot to discuss and many decisions to be made. Below is a brief summary of some of the recent work of the PCC.

  • New safeguarding documents and process were agreed (see Marje for more details).

  • Discussions on tithed giving 2026 following a detailed report from the World Mission Team with recommendations for PCC to consider further. The final decision will be made at the next PCC on 24th November. The World Mission Team presented their work on this on Sunday 16th November at the 9:00am and 10:45 services.

  • There has been further work around the church on the trees and further issues have arisen with the roofing.

  • The PCC will be finalising the budget for 2026 on November 24th. Further details will be shared after that date.

  • We were pleased to confirm that the Rev Lisa Price will be joining us as a curate from February for three months.

  • Members of the PCC met with Archdeacon Matthew Trick to discuss the process next year for appointing a new vicar and creating the ‘Parish Profile’.

  • Thanks were given for the many events that have been happening and are planned to happen over recent and coming months.

Please see a member of the PCC (see the noticeboard at the back of the church for who they are!) if you would like to know more about the work of the PCC.

Aftercare

As Christmas approaches we will again be collecting some festive goodies for the young people supported by our local aftercare team.  These are young people who have been looked after children in the care system and are now living independently.  Many will not have family or friends to spend Christmas with and our gifts will help them to know they are care about.  A list of suggested items is available at the back of church.  Thank you.

Pathways

Pathways is a local charity which works with homeless and vulnerable people in the area.  This year – throughout the winter and particularly in the festive season, - they are collecting items to put in a rucksack for those who may be rough sleeping. A list of the suggested items will be available at the back of church.  Please do take a look and consider whether you can donate any of the items listed.  Thank you

Cardboard boxes

We’re collecting clean, dry cardboard boxes and cardboard tubes (any length) The boxes need to be not too big, the longest side no more than about 20cm/8inches.

If you are able to unstick the glued edges so that it is flat, that would be helpful, but if not, just add it to the plastic box as it is!  The collection box is situated outside the office door.  Thank you

Deanery Synod Report

The report from the latest Deanery Synod is on the noticeboard at the back of church.

Living Nativity

Chesterfield Living Nativity is short of people to take part in the presentation on the afternoon of Sat.20th Dec. They are in need of men to play various parts, but most importantly they still need a Holy Family. If you think you can help in filling these parts please email yvonnehousemanager@hotmail.com for more information. Thank you, Yvonne Jones.

The Big Quiz Night

Please come along and support The Big Quiz Night on Friday 21st November.  All proceeds go to Tearfund.

Advent Prayer

Following the positive response last year, when many felt they were drawing deeper and closer to God, the congregations at St John’s and St Peter’s are encouraged again to set aside an hour each week during Advent to pray for our churches, its leadership, particularly as we face the interregnum, and our ministry  and mission in the community.

Please sign up to pray in your own home for one hour each week during Advent (from 30 November to midnight on Christmas Eve.) The first week has been divided into one hourly slots, between 12 noon and midnight each day and you can choose which of these best suits you. We then ask that you repeat this at the same time each week during the four weeks of Advent.

There are information sheets, with suggestions, at the back of church, as well as the diary of slots.  You are also encouraged to make a note of anything at all you feel God’s Holy Spirit has prompted you about during your prayers and to add this to the notice board in St John’s. This will enable us to build a fuller picture of how God may be leading us into 2026.

Each week in Advent there will be a specific time of gathering at St John’s on Tuesdays 7.30 – 8.30 pm as an opportunity to pray together as a church and encourage each other.

Wreath Making Workshop

The wreath making workshop is fully booked. If you have any evergreen foliage, holly, ivy, pinecone or other attractive greenery please bring it to church on Friday 28th November, in the afternoon.

If you would like to help at the workshop, please contact Emily on office@stjohnswalton.co.uk. There is no need for any creative expertise! We simply need people who would like to help provide a friendly environment, whether by chatting to guests, helping in the kitchen, or offering wreath-making support. .

Advent Crafternoon

On Saturday 29th November St Peter’s will be hosting an Advent Crafternoon.  The event will run from 3pm - 4pm.  Everyone welcome.

The Art of Spiritual Accompaniment

Does your heart long for a little time and space to pray, reflect and consider what God might be wanting to say to you? Do you find people open up to you and want to share something of their faith journey, prayer life and spiritual walk with you?

If the answer to those questions is yes then you might want to consider joining a small group of people exploring the art of spiritual discernment, direction and accompaniment together.  This is an experiential course for both lay and ordained people exploring listening, prayer, discernment and accompanying others in the Christian life.  It is organized by The Spirituality Network within the Diocese of Derby and the Nottingham and Derby Methodist District but open to all.   This  course, taking place in 2026, consists of twelve face to face sessions, on Saturdays from 10 am until 3:30pm spread over ten months.  The course cost will be £260 per person and is held at Darley Dale Methodist Church, Dale Road North, Darley Dale, Matlock DE4 2FS.  Closing date for applications is Friday 28th November 2025. For queries and to request an application form please email cameron.butland@derby.anglican.org
