St John’s Eco Group

Psalm 24:1: "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it".

Introduction:

We are small group with 7 core group members. Eco group meet bimonthly. Our activities are based around the ARocha Eco Church scheme  https://ecochurch.arocha.org.uk/  The survey provides a framework for taking practical action on caring for creation. Five areas make up the survey: Worship and teaching, Buildings and energy, Land and nature, Community and global engagement and Lifestyle. There are specific targets to meet and points are accrued for the bronze, silver and gold awards. We consider what we do and the effect it has on our local and global environment.

Eco Statement

St John’s is dedicated to contributing to a sustainable future for our planet through commitment to the 3 “R’s”

*Reduce consumption, waste and pollution

*Reuse what we have

*Recycle everything we can

We are committed to conserving energy, water and other natural resources and careful to use products that are environmentally friendly.

Our regular activities include RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, WWF Earth Hour, Plantlife: ‘No Mow May’, Fairtrade Foundation Fairtrade Fortnight. As well as participating annually in the Great British Spring Clean, we also have monthly litter picks on the first Tuesday of the month running from March to October, 9:30 - 10:30 from St John’s Church.

In 2025 we invited Ripple Effect to speak to us about their work empowering families in rural Africa to learn more, grow more and sell more, transforming their lives while protecting their environment. We also held an Eco Product Showcase that was great fun and an excellent opportunity to raise awareness and signpost to some local Eco businesses.

We are currently working with the World Mission Team on Great WaterBlitz in April, Churches Count on Nature (citizen science project) in June and Creationtide throughout September.

Anyone who wants to come along to the meetings regularly or on an ad-hoc basis (a specific topic or ‘green’ issues generally) is encouraged and is very welcome to join us. Please contact Eco Group via the church office.
